《尚书》治要

《礼记》治要·曲礼

曲礼曰:毋不敬〔礼主于敬〕,俨若思〔言人坐思,貌必俨然〕,安定辞〔审言语也〕,安民哉〔此三句可以安民也〕!

《孝经》治要

在上不骄,高而不危〔诸侯在民上,故言在上。敬上爱下,谓之不骄,故居高位,而不危殆也〕;制节谨度,满而不溢〔费用约俭,谓之制节。奉行天子法度,谓之谨度,故能守法,而不骄逸也〕。

高而不危,所以长守贵也〔居高位能不骄,所以长守贵也〕;满而不溢,所以长守富也〔虽有一国之财,而不奢泰,故能长守富〕。富贵不离其身〔富能不奢,贵能不骄,故云不离其身〕,然后能保其社稷〔上能长守富贵,然后乃能安其社稷〕,而和其民人〔薄赋敛,省徭役,是以民人和也〕,盖诸侯之孝也。《诗》云:战战兢兢,如临深渊,如履薄冰〔战战,恐惧。兢兢,戒慎。如临深渊,恐坠。如履薄冰,恐陷〕。

孙叔敖为楚令尹,一国吏民皆来贺。有一老父后来吊,叔敖曰:“楚王不知臣不肖,使臣受吏民之垢。人尽来贺,子独后来吊,岂有说乎?”父曰:“有。身已贵而骄人者,民去之;位已高而擅权者,君恶之;禄已厚而不知足者,患处之。”叔敖再拜曰:“敬受命,愿闻余教。”

父曰:“位已高而意益下,官益大而心益小,禄已厚而慎不敢取。君谨守此三者,足以治楚矣。”

故唐帝允恭克让,光被四表;成汤不敢怠遑,而掩有九域;文王袛畏,而造彼区夏也。

《孔子家语》治要·观周

盗憎主人,民恶其上。君子知天下之不可上也,故下之;知众人之不可先也,故后之。温恭慎德,使人慕之;执雌持下,人莫逾之。人皆趣彼,我独守此;人皆惑惑,我独不徙〔惑惑,东西转移之貌〕。

内藏我智,不示人技,我虽尊高,人弗我害。唯能于此,天道无亲,常与善人。戒之哉!戒之哉!”

孔子既读斯文,顾谓弟子曰:“小子志之,此言实而中、情而信。”

《周易》治要

“不出户庭,无咎。”子曰:“乱之所生也,则言语为之阶。君不密则失臣,臣不密则失身,机事不密则害成。是以君子慎密而不出也。”

《老子》治要

为无为〔无所造作〕,事无事〔除烦省事〕,味无味〔深思远虑,味道意也〕。报怨以德〔修道行善,绝祸于未生也〕。图难于其易〔欲图难事,当于易时,未及成也〕,为大于其细〔欲为大事,必作于小,祸乱从小来也〕。天下难事,必作于易;天下大事,必作于细。

盗憎主人,民恶其上。君子知天下之不可上也,故下之;知众人之不可先也,故后之。温恭慎德,使人慕之;执雌持下,人莫逾之。人皆趣彼,我独守此;人皆惑惑,我独不徙〔惑惑,东西转移之貌〕。

内藏我智,不示人技,我虽尊高,人弗我害。唯能于此,天道无亲,常与善人。戒之哉!戒之哉!”

孔子既读斯文,顾谓弟子曰:“小子志之,此言实而中、情而信。”

《尚书》治要

《礼记》治要·曲礼

孙叔敖为楚令尹,一国吏民皆来贺。有一老父后来吊,叔敖曰:“楚王不知臣不肖,使臣受吏民之垢。人尽来贺,子独后来吊,岂有说乎?”父曰:“有。身已贵而骄人者,民去之;位已高而擅权者,君恶之;禄已厚而不知足者,患处之。”叔敖再拜曰:“敬受命,愿闻余教。”

父曰:“位已高而意益下,官益大而心益小,禄已厚而慎不敢取。君谨守此三者,足以治楚矣。”

行有四仪:一曰志动不忘仁;二曰智用不忘义;三曰力事不忘忠;四曰口言不忘信。慎守四仪,以终其身,名功之从之也,犹形之有影、声之有响也。是故志不忘仁,则中能宽裕;智不忘义,则行有文理;力不忘忠,则动无废功;口不忘信,则言若符节。若中宽裕而行文理,动有功而言可信也,虽古之有厚功大名,见于四海之外,知万世之后者,其行身也,无以加于此矣。

慌其瞻视,轻其辞令,而望民之则我者,未之有也;莫之则者,必慢之者至矣。小人见慢,而致怨乎人,患己之卑,而不思其所以然,哀哉!是故君子敬孤独而慎幽微,虽在隐翳,鬼神不得见其隙,况于游宴乎?

君子口无戏谑之言,言必有防;身无戏谑之行,行必有检。言必有防,行必有检,虽妻妾不可得而黩也,虽朋友不可得而狎也。是以不愠怒,而教行于闺门;不谏谕,而风声化乎乡党。《传》称:大人正己而物正者,盖此之谓也。徒以匹夫之居犹然,况得志而行于天下乎。

故唐帝允恭克让,光被四表;成汤不敢怠遑,而掩有九域;文王袛畏,而造彼区夏也。
